Garbage Disposal Troubleshooting

Having problems with your kitchen’s garbage disposal?  Is it necessary to seek professional assistance?  On many occasions you can fix the problem yourself without calling a handyman or more expensive plumber.

As normal maintenance, to avoid odors and stoppages try to remember to use sufficient water flow when using your disposal.  Do not insert carbohydrate items (potatoes, mashed potatoes, rice, pastas), celery, corn husk, foreign obstructions like binkies, pull tabs, etc..  These items will jam/freeze your disposal.  Allow the disposal to clear of inserted debris before turning it off.  Along with an occasional ¼ to ½ of a citrus’s rind ground through will cheaply clean and refresh the grinding chamber.

Should you experience a jam or freeze, below is a troubleshooting matrix that will assist you.
